The southern part of the country (Androy, Anosy and Atsimo Andrefana regions) is easily affected by cyclical food and nutrition crises due to chronic rainfall insufficiency and a significant reduction in harvests.
MSP, the National Office of Nutrition (ONN) and UNICEF have authorized the identification of eight malnutrition communes among the districts affected by the drought.
The nutritional status of children in the eight communes was rated poor depending on the crises with a prevalence of 7.5% of children with BP <125 mm (proxy-MAG), 6.1% Moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) rate and 1.4% severe acute malnutrition (SAM). Children aged 24 to 47 months (17.4%) are 24 to 47 months (1.8%) and 48 to 59 months (0.7%).
Fishermen's children, farm workers, children who live far from health centers or those raised by grandparents because they are the fruit of an unrecognized marriage (Tsy vita fomba) are most at risk of malnutrition.
