Kaarta was chosen to carry out a Link NCA because, despite the actions carried out by the Malian Authorities and their partners (local and international, together with the NGO), the problem of undernourishment is still widespread and highly prevalent.

After the last national SMART nutrition survey, carried out in 2015, the results for the region of Kayes were a cause for concern with a prevalence rate of global acute malnutrition of 13.3%.

Out of the major risk factors, the following have been identified:

  • Insufficient agricultural production (market-gardening and pastoral)
  • Slow growth and scarce diversification of household resources
  • Limited diversity in food products
  • Inadequate access to drinking water
  • Insufficient hygiene practices
  • Economic and geographic obstacles limiting access to healthcare services
  • The allocation of household resources is not placing priority on healthcare
  • Non-optimal breastfeeding and childhood feeding practices
