WHH and AIM are implementing a four-year project funded by the European Union, the main objective of which is to reduce poverty among rural populations in ten municipalities of the district of Fort-Dauphin. The project known under the abbreviation “AFAFI-Sud” aims to improve the nutritional security of households in the intervention area and increase their resilience to climatic hazards. The realization of the Link NCA study helped to better understand the multi-sectoral risk factors of undernutrition and to strengthen programmatic responses.
Out of 20 risk factors, believed to have impact on the incidence of undernutrition in the study area, eight (8) risk factors were classified as having an important impact - two in the sector of food security and livelihoods (low access to income and low resilience capacities), two factors in the health sector (low nutritional status of women and low birth-spacing) , two factors in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector (low accessibility, availability and quality of water at household level and poor sanitation practices) while one factor has been identified in the sector of mental health and care practices (poor complementary feeding practices) and the gender (heavy workload of women).
Statistical analyses between the nutritional status of children and household risk factors have made it possible to differentiate the causal mechanisms of wasting, stunting and underweight. Indicators related to household income sources are present in all three pathways. The pathway of wasting and underweight also present strong evidence for resilience strategies but these strategies do not appear to have a real influence on stunting. In the health sector, the nutritional status of women has been linked to all three types of undernutrition. The indicators related to deworming and vaccination seem to play more on wasting, while antenatal visits are more linked to stunting and underweight. In the water, sanitation and hygiene sector, indicators show significant associations with stunting and underweight while they are not present on the pathway for wasting.
