The Burhanpur district is susceptible to migrations between States and a large number of its population being left without any land. As a whole, the area has fertile lands and diverse cultures. However, the agricultural sector is linked to the monsoon cycle and, in turn, to the level of rainfall. Even though the area has never experienced a major hunger situation because the production of the country provides for basic subsistence over the year, the levels of Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) remain high.
The prevalence rate of the GAM reached 24.6% in November 2013 and 34.7% in June 2014 during the rainy season (according to SMART surveys).
The following major risks have been identified:
The level of education of those responsible for the children,
Low income is a key contributor to a wide range of risk factors going from, inadequate food diversity to overworking women,
The majority of the population studied depend on seasonal, casual labour.
