The Borena area is mainly a pastoral area located in the South of Ethiopia and is on the border of the Somali region to the East. Action Against Hunger works in this area to respond to the specific vulnerability of the pastoral and agro-pastoral communities who are affected by chronic and persistent humanitarian crisis.

In the Borena area the prevalence rate of global acute malnutrition was estimated at 11.3%. The prevalence rate of chronic acute malnutrition in the Regional State of Oromia where this area is located was 38.2%.

The following risk factors have been considered “major”:

  • Overworking women,
  • Insufficient nourishment during pregnancy or breast-feeding of mothers,
  • Short spacing between births, no family-planning,
  • Low rate of exclusive breast feeding to infants less than 6 months,
  • Insufficient pre-weaning feeding practices,
  • Inadequate access to drinking water,
  • Intra-household food allocation not favouring women.
