The district of Moroto is one of the 7 districts in the region of Karamoja, to the Northeast of Uganda. This district is mainly agro-pastoral and susceptible to flooding. The prevalence of under nourishment in the district (underweight, stunting) is amongst the highest in the region of Karamoja despite operational programs to reduce it.

The rate of global acute malnutrition and severe acute malnutrition in infants less than five years old in the region is 13.2% and 5.2% respectively.

The following major risk factors have been identified:

Inadequate infant feeding practices,

Overworking mothers,

Poor breast-feeding practices,

Insufficient hygiene and sanitation practices,

Poor health of infants less than 5 years old,

Unstable access to food.
