For any years now, Grand Kanem has been facing a vulnerable food and nutritional situation that originates from factors that are partly structural and partly conjectural. Naturally, this situation is linked to climatic trends having a negative effect on agricultural and pastoral campaigns in the sub-region.

The prevalence rate of global acute malnutrition reached 20.1% in August 2011 in the Kanem region. Acute severe malnutrition reached 3% in the same period.

The results of the study confirm the following risk factors:

  • Insufficient agricultural production and livestock breeding,
  • Climatic shocks,
  • Lack of training and farming tools,
  • Destruction of crops by birds and insects,
  • Limited access to water,
  • Insufficient access to markets.
