The Guidimakha region is located in the South of Mauritania at the crossroads of Mali, Mauritania and Senegal. This region was chosen to carry out a Link NCA because, despite the actions performed by the Mauritanian Authorities and their partners, the problem of under nourishment is still widespread.

In Guidimakha, the prevalence rate of global acute malnutrition was the highest in the country at 22.4% with chronic malnutrition at 21.9% that, despite being moderate, represents a serious situation that needs to be monitored (SMART survey, 2015).

The following major risk factors have been identified:

  • Limited physical and financial access for the more vulnerable communities during difficult periods,
  • Access to drinking water is critical and is the cause of high vulnerability to waterborne illnesses,
  • Inappropriate hygiene practices at home,
  • Lack of hygiene in the community,
  • Pregnant and breast-feeding women are often under nourished,
  • The people, and in particular women, in the main, have received very little schooling.
